NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - New Rochelle High School senior A.J. Barbaria was one of many community members who helped place nearly 3,000 flags in front of City Hall Friday night in preparation for the citys candlelight remembrance vigil Sunday.
The idea of giving back to the community gives someone that great appreciation for what their community provides and service for what every flag means, said Barbaria, who is also a member of Salesian High School's Sea Cadet Unit.
Its important for everyone to be here, said building official Paul Vacca, who attended with his two daughters. It was a terrible day in our countrys history."
City officials, boy and girl scouts, police, fire fighters and members of the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association placed 2,977 flags on the front lawn of City Hall in remembrance of those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
Association Director Peter Parente said he felt the need to give back and do his part by helping to organize New Rochelles Sept. 11 services, especially after witnessing the events 10 years ago.
Spotlights will shine on the flags from the beginning of services at 8 p.m. Sunday until midnight that night.
In the event of rain, the vigil will move inside council chambers.
