While record June temperatures are burning through New Rochelle, things were quite cool inside the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center.
The City of New Rochelle announced Wednesday that the Senior Center at 94 Davis Avenue would be the citys first cooling center. The center was unusually busy Wednesday afternoon and many residents were seen either dancing or conversing as the air-conditioning made for a pleasant afternoon.
Its working out real good, said Steve Skowronski, who was biding his time talking to ladies at his table.
Wednesday's reported high was 95 degrees and Thursday is expected to bring a high of 100 degrees with thunderstorms. Things should begin to cool off Friday with a high of 82 degrees forecasted. The weekend should be even cooler with temperatures in the 70s predicted.
Inside the Doyle Senior Center, however, the temperature was pleasant. Some seniors took to the dance floor, throwing their hands in the air.
It feels great, said Mary Spoggiloi, who lives two blocks away and walked to the center in the morning to beat the heat. I come here almost every day now.
Even residents who are used to high temperatures found Wednesdays weather difficult.
I came from Ft. Lauderdale and it was cooler over there than it was over here. Its hot, so hot, said Gina Miele, a New Rochelle resident.
Pat OHanlon stopped by the library Wednesday morning and made her way to the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center to cool off. She sat amongst her friends while reading from her book.
I always bring a sweater, she laughed about the cold air conditioning. I love it.
The cooling center is open Wednesday through Friday during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
