New Rochelle Mural Reflects School Community

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Trinity Elementary School fifth-grader Leo Torres was one of about 300 students the New Rochelle school who helped create a mural showing what the school was about as a whole and artistically.

“We’re not just a huge big happy family we’re caring and if somebody needs help we go help them,” said Torres. The mural entitled “We Are” was a school-wide effort in conjunction with the Arts Excel Program where over 300 students. Among them are  Torres,  Esther Marques, Antonio Corona, and Sarah Mendez who helped create the mosaic masterpiece with assistance from local New Rochelle artist Gina Kingsley. He is the owner of Paint Your Art Out in Larchmont.

The mural was also Trinity's first attempt at an outside art project. “It expresses that when we're together anything can be accomplished,” he said. Trinity Art Teacher Judy Scheck's previous art classes had created other masterpieces inside the school, but felt it was time to create on the outside of the school.

The school devoted a lot of time and energy to create such a significant piece of work. "It wasn't easy," said Scheck. Torres is proud of the work he and the other students created.

“It expresses that when were together anything can be accomplished,” Torres said. The art also reflects that the Trinity school community is kind, energetic, creative, ready, responsible, and respectful.

Once boards were up and Trinity teachers traced outlines of student’s bodies for the placement of images, students placed different colored pieces of glass on the work in a collaborative effort. Scheck and the rest of the Trinity Elementary School student body hope to put more artwork on the school's outside walls in the near future.
