NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson has landed in Charlotte, N.C., for his first Democratic National Convention. Bramson reports on his arrival prior to the three-day event.
In thinking about the convention in recent days and now being here I am continuously struck by the tension between the insubstantiality of the event itself and the importance of the larger process it serves, said Bramson on a posting he wrote on his website from inside Time Warner Arena.
Bramson said the arena has blue video screens everywhere similar to Times Square in New York City.
Its smaller and more intimate than I had expected, he said in the post.
Bramson will move to Bank of America stadium to hear President Barack Obama's acceptance speech on Thursday.
We all recognize that conventions have lost their historical purpose, Bramson said on his website. I dont kid myself: as a delegate, my function is to serve as a prop in a television production..
But the stakes in the election are so enormous and the contrast between the values and programs of the presidential candidates so large, that I do believe there is value in an event that communicates a governing vision in a fashion that is sustained and attention-grabbing. In that sense, I am proud to be here and to play my (very little) part, he said.
Bramson sees staffers, and members of the media preparing for the event. This includes testing audio systems, and adjusting speakers.
The seats in the stands are mostly empty, giving everything a calm before the storm quality and also affording me a chance to take this photo alongside the New York sign, he said of a photo posted above his entry.
That may be the closest I get to the sign all week, he said.
Bramson said he and the rest of the New York delegates will sit in the upper sections of the arena between delegations from Alabama, and Arkansas.
But I expect well be able to see everything just fine, he said.
