NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. The New Rochelle man stopped by police from jumping off the Tappan Zee Bridge on Sunday morning had beaten his wife the night before the incident, police said.
Thomas Porzio, 55, who has two listed New Rochelle addresses, was charged Wednesday with second-degree attempted murder, a felony. Porzio allegedly beat his wife with a barbell and choked her after the two got into an argument Saturday night, said New Rochelle Police Capt. Joseph Schaller.
The woman suffered cuts and bruises to her face, Schaller said.
Porzio had been drinking, Schaller said. The man tried to leave the 703 Pelham Road apartment where the incident occurred, and then began choking his wife, Schaller said.
Neighbors came out of their apartments to help before Porzio fled the area.
Porzio then tried to jump off the bridge Sunday morning, and was charged Wednesday by New Rochelle police after New York state police identified him as the suspect in the beating incident.
New Rochelle police also reported the following items:
Accident: Christopher Sherman, 28, of 16 Cliff St. in New Rochelle, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor. Police said he hit a sewer cap while under the influence of marijuana as he was coming off the I-95 Exit 15 offramp, heading north on Main Street in a 2009 Hyundai.
Sherman had a 59-year-old Rye resident with him in the vehicle. Both were taken to Sound Shore Medical Center after complaining of pain, and Sherman was charged after being questioned by police.
Tire Thefts: All four tires were taken off four vehicles parked Thursday in an underground garage at 1273 North Ave. The vehicles were then placed on cinderblocks.
