New Rochelle Counselors Simulate Summer Activities

Counselors for a New Rochell- based camp began preparing for summer by playing soccer and participating in other camp-like activities Friday.

The counselors who ran around Supply Fields in Scarsdale playing soccer weren’t just out for a good time. This group, mostly undergraduate and graduate students, were training for New York University's Child Study Center's Summer Program For Kids — a seven-week therapeutic program for children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and other behavioral problems.

"This is part of three-and-a-half-weeks of full-time training where counselors learn behavioral techniques to help children develop social skills, self-esteem, confidence and sports skills," said Karen Fleiss., director of NYU Summer Program For Kids. "We found a field and are practicing the real thing so counselors are well prepared for June 27 (the start of camp.)”

After participating in simulated camp activities, the counselors-in- training held post-activity discussions to review how the activity went and what could go better next time. They’ll also do that with the campers.

"We try to put our hearts and souls into this because the kids really need it," said Fleisser.

This camp, which started in 1997, will be held at The Hallen School in New Rochelle. For more information call (212) 263-0760 or visit www.AboutOur Kids.org/SPK.
