New Rochelle Community Hosting Fundraiser

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Ward Acres Community Garden is hosting an art exhibit entitled “Art for Public Art” featuring work by professional and amateur artists who are gardeners or somehow connected to the community garden’s efforts this week.

All work is available for sale by silent auction and include ceramics, photography, jewelry, paintings, sketches and a hair highlighting basket, according to Stephanie Tomei.

“We are thrilled to spearhead a program that brings together so many different people of all ages and backgrounds from throughout the community,” said New Rochelle Council on the Arts (NRCA) President Judith Weber in a statement.

“Mosaic is really the perfect medium for art in the garden, as the community garden truly reflects the mosaic of people who make up the diverse community of New Rochelle,” said Ward Acres Steering Committee member Maggie McGovern.

Tomei said funds raised from the exhibit and a concluding breakfast event will contribute to the creation of “The Meeting Place,” a functional public art project that will be unveiled in the center of the garden in September.

The project is a collaboration of Ward Acres Community Garden, NRCA and the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle.

The mosaic benches are being created by artist Sarah Coble with the assistance of middle school-aged children from several community gardens.

Bidding for works of arts will conclude at a Breakfast Fundraiser at AJ’s Burgers, 542 North Avenue, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 31. Cost is $20 per person and tickets may be purchased online.

“I am delighted that I can contribute to this community collaboration and I look forward to serving a delicious breakfast to our guests next Saturday,” said AJ’s Burgers owner Alan Cohen in a statement.
