The New Jersey Devils announced they have signed captain Nico Hischier to a five-year $58.5 million extension, that will keep him in red and white through 2032. Hischier has been a Devil since they drafted him first overall in 2017. The contract takes effect beginning the 2027-2028 season.
“When I took this job, I knew that Nico was one of the core pieces that I definitely wanted as part of our future,” newly hired General Manager Sunny Mehta said in a statement. “The way he plays the game, his leadership, and selflessness are qualities we value for this team. We all look forward to him leading this franchise, on and off the ice, for years to come.”
Hischier is coming off a season where he recorded 28 goals and 38 assists, 66 points, though the Devils missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. He led the Devils with 11 powerplay goals last season and is known for being a whiz in the faceoff circle.
He was named the 12th captain in team history in 2021, and is the highest drafted Switzerland-born skater in NHL history. His 199 goals is fifth all time in Devils franchise history, and he is only three away from tying Zajac and Bobby Holik for third most all-time.
His 488 points are sixth all-time in franchise history. A one-time NHL All-Star, he was also a finalist for the Selke Trophy for best defensive forward in 2023.
