Hector Lopez had planned to take a Metro-North train into Grand Central Terminal Wednesday but Mother Nature had different plans. Service to and from New Canaan was halted for several hours Wednesday after a tree branch fell onto overhead wires near town.
"The planet needs all kinds of weather," said Lopez, 68, who lives on Jelliff Mill Road. "I feel all right, but I'd rather be in the tropics."
Lopez sat contentedly aboard a CTTransit bus, reading a Spanish-language newspaper in anticipation of his afternoon trip to New York City. Metro-North ran shuttle buses between New Canaan and Stamford until the tracks were cleared.
Lopez said the icy weather and all the snow that's fallen in New Canaan and elsewhere hadn't unnerved him. Julie Terreson, 23, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., also said she was all right with the bus. The Seattle native said the weather in the Northeast this winter is "pretty crazy" but nice if you stay indoors. "It's a pretty good reason to sit by the fire," she said.
Just as she was prepared to board a shuttle bus, a railroad announcer told her and other passengers that the 2:27 p.m. train was getting ready to go. Terreson got in line at an electronic ticket machine to buy a boarding pass. "The train is better than the bus, anyway," she said.
