New Canaan Moves Forward on Lumberyard Study

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The Board of Selectmen plans to apply for a state grant to study whether a parking deck and senior housing would be appropriate uses for the Lumberyard parking lot.

The board voted 2-0 on Tuesday to apply for a $400,000 state Transit-Oriented Development grant to look into building housing and expanded parking on the commuter lot.

First Selectman Jeb Walker said the grant is an opportunity to see what can be done at the site to improve housing options without having to use local funds. He reiterated that the town is not obligated to pursue a project. Several residents have worried about the impact such a project would have on downtown New Canaan.

Selectman Sally Hines, who did not vote because she called in to the meeting, agreed with going forward with the application. “It seems to me that there’s nothing to lose and something to gain,” she said.

The Town Council plans to hold a public hearing before Sept. 15, the deadline for an application, to get more residents’ comments.
