New Canaan Library Extends Late Hours

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – As residents wait for their power to be restored, the New Canaan Library will stay open later to help people charge up their devices.

Library Director Alice Knapp said the library will remain open until 10 p.m. on Tuesday. On Monday it stayed open until 11 p.m. to assist residents whose homes were still in the dark after Tropical Storm Irene.

“It was busy up until 11 p.m. [Monday],” Knapp said. “People are here to read, charge up their phones, to use the wireless [Internet access]. Until their situation gets better, it makes sense for us to stay open for people who need power.”

Knapp estimates between 2,000 and 2,400 people visited the library Monday. The library also circulated 2,500 items–books, audiobooks and DVDs–about double the number on a normal day.

The library will also screen movies for people in need of an entertainment break. The “Rescuers Down Under” will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Lamb Auditorium. “Homeward Bound” will screen at 4 p.m. and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” at 7 p.m. “The Lincoln Lawyer” starts at 9 p.m.
