New Canaan Expands Look Into Future

Waveny House, the New Canaan Police Department and town parking lots are among the facilities that will be on the table as the committee considering the future of New Canaan proceeds into the second phase of its study.

Comments from residents, consultants and town officials have prompted the Long Range Planning Committee to include more buildings and facilities in a possible master plan. The committee talked about the changes during its meeting on Tuesday.

Town officials began last year studying what should happen with several town facilities, including Town Hall, the New Canaan Fire Department and New Canaan Library. Committee Chairwoman Christine Wagner said it makes sense to review nearby facilities, especially if changes to one space might create room elsewhere.

“The problem becomes, how do you look at town hall operations if you don’t include all the town hall functions, which are scattered?” Wagner said.

Wagner said she and the rest of the committee set certain parameters for their survey. “Our goal originally was to try to be comprehensive. So now we’re more comprehensive,” she said.

Wagner said the second phase of the study will also look into senior housing, where it can be built and if it will have any overlaps with other potential new or renovated spaces. “Senior housing is something that is very much in the forefront of town thinking right now,” she said.

The projected cost of the study’s second phase is about $175,000, Wagner said. Although the Long Range Planning Committee has submitted a $200,000 request for funds in the 2011-12 proposed budget, Wagner said the group may ask for a special appropriation in April that would enable it to host public meetings in June and October.
