DARIEN, Conn. Republican Linda McMahon and Democrat Chris Murphy will face off in the U.S. Senate race after Tuesdays primary, which saw low turnout from Darien.
McMahon received fewer votes in town than her opponent, Darien native Chris Shays. Shays received 966 votes, while McMahon received 711, according to the registrars of voters.
Murphy received 299 votes from Darien Democrats, defeating his opponent Susan Bysiewicz, who received 67 votes.
Of Dariens 8,340 total registered voters, 2,043 cast votes in Tuesdays primary, a turnout of 24.5 percent. Republicans outnumbered Democrats at the polls, with 1,677 of the towns registered Republicans voting, compared with 366 of Dariens 2,313 Democrats.
Even though Dariens turnout was low, showing up to the polls paid off for voters such as Ciara and Mike Thurlow.
"We're supporters of Linda McMahon. We hope she wins," Ciara Thurlow said as they left Town Hall after voting Tuesday evening. "We like that she comes from business, and that she isn't a career politician."
Although they said they also like Christopher Shays, they like that McMahon is a fiscal conservative who wants to create more jobs and limit regulations in the state. They also said it is important to get out and vote in the primaries.
"My feeling is if you have the opportunity to vote and you don't exercise that right, you've left the decision up to other people," Mike Thurlow said. "Whenever we have the opportunity we try to make the effort to vote."
