SOMERS, N.Y. - Incumbents Mary Beth Murphy (R,C,IN), Richard Clinchy (D,R,WF,IN) and Tom Garrity (D,R,C,IN) have been re-elected to their positions on the Town Council as expected.
In addition, Town Clerk Kathleen Pacella (D,R,C,IN), Town Justices Michael J. McDermott (R,C,IN) and Denis J. Timone (R,C,IN) and Superintendent of Highways Thomas Chiaverini (D,R,C,IN) were also re-elected.
All of these elections were uncontested.
Councilman Garrity, who has served one 4-year term and will be starting his second, commented: I look forward to serving another four years. This has been the toughest year for the budgeting process. I plan to be fiscally conservative.
I have an open door policy, he added. People can reach out to me any time. I hope that I can represent all of the people in Somers.
Councilman Richard Clinchy, also entering his second term on the town council, said, Its always an honor to be given the public trust. The thrill may not be as great [because its an uncontested election], but the honor is just as great.
His immediate goal? The budget is overshadowing everything, he said. Weve got to maximize every dollar and explain whats going on and why. Weve got to explain the choices involved.
People often ask me, Why do you want to be on the council? And I say, People are so nice -- and almost always appreciative. There are times when you can help someone and you feel good about that. Youve served a purpose. You feel responsible. Never take yourself seriously, but take your job seriously.
The races for the county legislature seats in District 2, where incumbent Michael Kaplowitz (D,WF,IN) was challenged by Terrence Murphy (R,C) and District 4, where incumbent Peter Harckham (D,WF,I) was challenged by Peter Michaelis (R,C) are still unresolved.
