Murphy Cancels Halloween in Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. - Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy is advising parents, caregivers and trick-or-treaters that Halloween activities in Somers have been cancelled for Monday night because of the continuing power outage and ongoing danger from fallen wires and trees.

Residents are asked to delay the customary trick-or-treating for a few days. It is hoped that all services will be back in operation before the end of the week. Meanwhile, dry ice is available at the middle school.

Readers of The Daily Somers' Facebook page had mixed responses to the Halloween news. Marlene DiFalco Pfaffenbach said, "You cannot cancel Halloween!" Michelle Ferrara Castelluccio said, "My three kids need some entertainment. Will another town help out our kids?"

David Van Wart said, "Some developments are perfectly fine with no damage and full power. That the town feels that they can cancel Halloween is idiotic. This is not a decision that should be made by Murphy. This is a decision that should be left to the parents of trick-or-treaters."

Rozmarin Szabo Bruncaj said, "I guess the town cannot guarantee the safety of kids walking around in the dark, so I appreciate the attempt on their side to keep our youngsters safe." Liz Donovan Olinto added, "Smart move. Wires down, trees down, no lights on the streets -- an accident and vandalism waiting to happen."
