MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. With New York States release of the test scores for students in grades three through eight in math and English, the Pleasantville and Mount Pleasant Central School Districts scored right in the middle of other districts in the surrounding area.
According to the results, Briarcliff Manor Union Free School District tested the best out of every district in the Mount Pleasant area. In fact, in the math test, Briarcliff Manor had at least 90 percent of students in every grade reach the proficiency level or better. Proficiency or better is a score of 3 or 4 on the test.
Yet Sharon Sternchein, a Briarcliff Manor parent, doesn't see the significance of standardized testing.
"It's good to know where a child stands and to see if they need any additional help in certain subjects," Sternchein said. "But I don't think it should be a huge portrayal of a student academics."
Sternchein said she believes this is especially true in the younger grades and that standardized testing should not be a serious issue until the high school level. Sternchein has one student set to enter their senior year of high school and one about to enter the seventh grade.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Valhalla Union Free School District tested the worst out of any of the Mount Pleasant area school districts. In the majority of Valhalla's grades only about 70 percent of students reached proficiency level or better in both English and math.
Among seventh graders in the Valhalla Union Free School District, only placed 58 percent achieved proficiency level or better in English. In comparison, Pleasantville Union Free School District placed 86 percent of their seventh grade students in proficiency level or better in English, and Mount Pleasant Central School District placed 74 percent.
Out of all of the school districts, Pleasantville placed the highest in eighth grade math, with a remarkable 97 percent of students reaching the proficiency level or better.
