Stamford voters gave Republican Michael Molgano a slim victory over Democrat Susana Vidan, choosing Molgano to become the new face representing the 144th Assembly District. Molgano bested Vidan by a vote of 3,557 to 3,470.
The 87-vote difference is not small enough to warrant a recount, said Town Clerk Donna Loglisci. That determination, she explained, would be based on voting percentages, not numerical totals. Since the proportion of votes cast for Molgano was 51 percent -- a clear majority -- there will not be a recount, Loglisci said. The proportion of votes cast for Vidan was 49 percent.
The race for the district seat became wide open after State Rep. Jim Shapiro announced in May he would not seek another term. Vidan ran a spirited campaign, introducing herself to district residents and explaining her positions on issues ranging from support of new technologies to bolstering the economy, greater access to homecare for seniors and stronger state investment in local education. She has two children in the Stamford public schools and had originally considered running for a seat on the Board of Education.
Voters chose the person they already knew as a local representative. Molgano, who works in the Internet technology field, has been a member of the Stamford Board of Representatives since 2002. He's served as vice chair of the Education Committee and also has served on the Steering, Appointments and Housing Community Development/Social Services committees.
