The last one sent everyone racing toward a pond.
It began at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, when a Fauquier County resident called 911 after spotting a small child walking across his property on security cameras, according to the sheriff's office.
The boy's parents called next to report their 4-year-old missing.
Then a neighbor several hundred yards up the street called with the most alarming report yet: He had seen a small child jump into a pond.
A deputy who had already reached the property where the boy was first spotted immediately headed up the road.
By the time he reached the pond, several men were already in the water looking for the child.
The deputy joined them and organized an underwater search. Minutes later, one of the men found the boy several feet beneath the surface.
They pulled him from the water and carried him to shore, where the deputy began CPR.
Emergency medical crews took over when they arrived and continued working to save the boy before he was rushed to UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center. He was later transferred to Fairfax Hospital.
As of Friday, Aug. 21, the 4-year-old was alive and remained on life support.
The sheriff's office credited the residents who quickly reported seeing the child and the neighborhood men who entered the pond before first responders arrived.
"We are grateful for the people who reported seeing the child and the heroic efforts of the neighborhood men who entered the pond at their own risk to find the child," the agency said.
Those men, the sheriff's office added, helped "give him a chance at life."
