Mill River Collaborative was one of nine Stamford nonprofits receiving grants from the First County Bank Foundation, according to a release from the bank's press office. The collaborative was given a $10,000 grant to help further its restoration and park-development efforts. The grants, which total $77,780, are intended to aid organizations focusing on economic development, community support, and housing programs.
The collaborative was formed to restore the Mill River and Mill Pond to its natural state. A park and other improvements are part of the plan.
"The Mill River project is moving along nicely and we continue our commitment to the Jewish War Veteran scholarship fund," said the foundation's vice president Katherine Harris in the release. "And for the first time, three firefighting companies Long Ridge, Turn of River and Springdale all applied and received grants from the foundation." Jewish War Veteran Community Scholarship Inc. received a $5,000 grant. Long Ridge and Turn of River fire companies each received $2,890 in funding, and Springdale was awarded a $2,000 grant.
Other recipients and their grant amounts are the Housing Development Fund, $20,000, New Neighborhood Inc., $20,000, Rebuilding Together, $10,000, and the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County Inc., $5,000. Eligible organizations must have nonprofit tax exempt status and be located in Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk or Westport, among other criteria.
