A Long Island contractor was arrested after police say he accepted payment for home renovations but stopped work before the project was finished, leaving a Stony Brook homeowner without the services she paid for, Suffolk County Police said in a release issued Monday, July 20.

A Stony Brook homeowner paid for renovations that police say were never finished. Now Michael Specchio is facing grand larceny and unlicensed contractor charges, and Suffolk County detectives believe there may be more victims.

The woman hired M3 Development Group Inc. on Jan. 8, 2026, to complete improvements to her Stony Brook home, police said. The contractor, identified as Michael Specchio, completed only part of the renovations before abandoning the job, according to investigators.

Sixth Squad detectives arrested Specchio, 48, of East Islip, at the Sixth Precinct at 3 p.m. Monday. During the investigation, detectives also determined that his Suffolk County contractor's license had expired, police said.

Specchio was charged with third-degree grand larceny and acting as an unlicensed contractor, authorities said.

He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip.

Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Specchio to contact Suffolk County Police at 631-852-COPS (2677).
