Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, NC, shot three of his coworkers at United Rentals on Wellington Road in Manassas shortly after 7 a.m. on Sept. 30, killing two before fleeing south and ultimately taking his own life along I-81, according to Manassas City and Virginia State Police.
Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33, were killed in the shooting. A third victim survived and remained hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.
All three worked with Grant at United Rentals, police confirmed. Investigators still don't know why he opened fire.
The first call came in at 7:11 a.m. at the United Rentals facility at 9415 Wellington Road. Officers from Manassas City Police and the Prince William County Sheriff's Office arrived three minutes later and found three people wounded. Grant was already gone.
Police said he fled in a silver Toyota Camry, setting off a widespread search and warnings for residents to lock their doors and stay inside as investigators tried to track him down.
His cellphone provided the break.
Detectives pinged it to Harrisonburg and alerted Virginia State Police that Grant could be heading through Rockingham County.
At around 8:20 a.m., troopers were told to be on the lookout.
One later spotted Grant's Camry heading south on I-81 near mile marker 235 in Augusta County.
Grant pulled into a rest area near mile marker 232, where troopers attempted to stop him. He got out of the Camry, then climbed back inside and drove off, prompting a pursuit.
Five miles later, it ended.
Grant pulled onto the shoulder near mile marker 227, got out with a gun pointed at his head and remained there as a Virginia State Police tactical team and negotiator were called in.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., police said Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.
Virginia State Police said troopers did not use force during the encounter. The shooting remains under investigation, and police said Grant's motive remained unclear Wednesday afternoon. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Manassas City Police detectives.
