Newburgh resident Mark Adams, 41, was arrested following the assault on Tuesday, Oct. 6, the City of Newburgh Police Department announced on Thursday, Oct. 8.

On the day of the incident, officers responded to a home near 29 East Parmenter St. just before 7 p.m. after receiving a report of an unknown man inside a residence. The woman told police that Adams, whom she knew, had asked to use her bathroom.

After she allowed him inside, Adams asked for help with the toilet, according to police, who added that when the woman entered the bathroom, Adams closed the door, trapped her inside with him, and began attacking her.

The department said Adams applied pressure to the woman's neck and repeatedly slammed her against the wall.

Other people inside the home eventually heard the struggle and intervened, using a knife in self-defense to free the woman, according to authorities.

Adams then fled the residence. Officers searched the surrounding neighborhood and, with help from an anonymous caller, found Adams near Liberty Street and Gidney Avenue about an hour after the incident, police said.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal obstruction of breathing, third-degree assault, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment.

Adams was held overnight before being arraigned in City Court at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

He was released following his arraignment under New York State's bail laws, according to police.
