Officers were dispatched just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, after 911 received a call reporting a suicidal subject on the bridge, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department announced on Thursday, Jan. 22.
When patrol units arrived, officers found a man standing near the railing, police said. Officers made contact and requested assistance from members of the department’s Hostage Negotiation Team.
Negotiators soon established a dialogue with the man and, after some conversation, were able to convince him to step away from the railing, police said.
The man was then taken to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment. Officers helped with the intake process before transferring care to hospital staff, according to police.
The department reminded the public that help is available for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis — residents can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, for free and confidential support. Mental Health America of Dutchess County also offers local resources and services, police said.
