The Mamaroneck Public Library closed its temporary location Monday so staff can begin the move back into the original building, which has been under renovation for two and a half years.
It feels like were moving into a palace, said head reference librarian Lori Friedli, sitting in a room without windows amid a clutter of boxes packed with books and DVDs.
The library will close for three weeks while its collection is transferred into the newly renovated building at 136 Prospect Ave. The library has been under construction since November of 2008 and is expected to open June 18.
The majority of the collection has been in storage and out of circulation due to lack of space.
To be able to see the entire collection again is going to be wonderful, said Friedli.
Patrons can access libraries within the Westchester Library System during the transition.
The new library has been expanded to almost twice its original size and will feature a childrens wing and a separate area for young adults. Head of Teen Services Ellen McTyre said teen programs have been limited because there was no suitable space, though the library has been able to host some activities at the Harbor Island Park facilities across the street.
Teens need their own space, said McTyre. They think differently from young children.
New computers are also being added to all areas of the library and a tech lab, where computer training will be provided to patrons of all ages and proficiency levels, is another new addition.
Laura Brown, a Mamaroneck resident and mother of two, didnt take her young daughters to the interim location very often.
We didnt like the temporary location, she said. Were glad theyre moving. Its a great resource for the community.
