Residents can start putting leaves at curbside for collection this weekend.
This year, the DPW has a leaf strategy that includes deploying men and equipment more frequently in the parts of town that have the most leaves, and communicating their pickup schedule with homeowners and landscaping companies.
DPW Director Glen Dowson said leaves are staying on the trees a little longer than usual this fall. The challenge for a successful leaf season is flexibility that accommodates unpredictable natural patterns, and varies workforce by need, he said.
Leaf season generally lasts about 10 weeks, according to Dowson. The DPW plans to notify neighborhoods and landscapers of their collection schedule to allow people to get leaves to the curb ahead of pickup, and minimize the length of time leaves stay at the roadside.
Cragmere and Fardale, the neighborhoods with the greatest concentration of 100-year old trees, will receive extra attention because of the volume of leaves shed.
