MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. - Go to Leonard Park on a Monday morning and you're sure to see a group of men playing soccer or disc golf. Dressed in casual clothing and out of their church apparel, you wouldn't know these athletes are priests.
Sunday's are really busy for us, as you can imagine, so we like to get out on Mondays and play a little disc golf and have a picnic, said Father Jason Smith of Legionaries of Christ of the New York Tri-State Area. I love playing disc golf, so I like to take the group out to play at Leonard Park and FDR Park routinely.
Smith was ordained in Rome in 2006 after receiving a degree in humanities from the Center of Humanities and Sciences in Cheshire, CT. He also earned a degree in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. After ordination, Smith began his priesthood for the Catholic formation of youth in New York and Bridgeport.
While Smith usually works with youth, his organization has events for everyone. On Saturday, Oct. 22, his parish will be hosting its 13th annual Friends of the Legion Benefit Gala. The event will take place at Our Lady of Thornwood Conference Center. There is also a Couples Retreat on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Father John Bartunek of Our Lady of Thornwood will serve as Retreat Master. The event will include Sunday Mass and a luncheon. There is a $250 fee per couple for the Retreat.
