Liquor Stores Pass Police Test

Parents worried about underage drinking might just have one less thing to be worried about, if tests conducted by the New Canaan Police Department last week are any indication. Just before the Memorial Day weekend, the department worked with teenage volunteers to perform alcohol compliance checks in the town’s liquor stores. All seven businesses passed the test with flying colors.

For the undercover operation, trained volunteers between the ages of 16 and 19 entered liquor stores alone, but under police supervision, and asked to buy alcoholic beverages. When the stores’ employees asked for identification, the volunteers either admitted their real age or claimed that they forgot their driver’s license. If a store still allowed them to buy liquor, then it would have failed the test. None of the seven stores tested did so.

“The goal is not to trick or entice establishments into selling to minors, but rather to bring businesses into compliance with state law,” said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc in a press release.  The New Canaan Police will now report the results to the Department of Consumer Protection’s Liquor Control Division.
