The Easton Public Library has a simple goal every summer getstudents into the library.
"You take a child out of school for six weeks and they are notreading regularly, they are going to lose some of their skills," saidLibrary Director Bernadette Baldino. "Through the summer program theymaintain their reading skills and actually may increase theirabilities.
In order to get kids reading, Baldino and fellow librarians use awide array of summer activities. While not finalized, the list ofsummer events includes weekly age specific craft tutorials, guestspeakers, readers and musicians, adult and child focused sciencedemonstrations and a family field day.
The library also has a 'summer reading incentive' program that issuesa prizes to students for every 10 books read.
"We find that we have different types of kids," said Lynn Zaffino, achildren and young adults librarian. "Some kids are big readers andmaybe not into crafts, while others are not big readers.""We try to have different types of activities based on different kidsinterest."
According to the two librarian, the popular series this summer are"Percy Jackson & the Olympians", "39 Clues", "Diary of a Wimpy Kid","Pinkalicious" and "The Twilight Saga." Rhyming picture books writtenby author Dan Gutman are also popular.
"Kids love series," said Baldino. "When I was young we had 'NancyDrew' and 'The Hardy Boys'.""Kids get familiar with the characters and they want to see them indifferent situations."
Zaffino and fellow librarians also try to locate books of interestfor light readers.
