MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. - As Maria Ciccone returned to the Mt. Kisco Public Library from her lunch break she was excited as the clouds began to darken overhead and threaten of impending storm.
As the Youth Services Librarian and one of the overseers of Teen Gaming Night, rainy days usually mean lots of business from kids who dont want to be trapped inside all evening. Unfortunately the August lull when many families leave for vacations took away a lot of the usual participants of the weekly game night.
But despite the slow turnout on Wednesday night, Ciccone is happy that the library is offering programs with young adults in mind.
Its a great way to get teen in to the library. I think for a long time theyve been the under-served population, Ciccone said. Any way to get them in is great.
Ciccone hopes that attracting teens to the library will help introduce a new group of people to the facilities, whether its a parent dropping off a child that looks around or a friend of one of the regular Gaming Night participants.
Its a great way for maybe people who have never been to the library to be introduced. Its a great starter program. Ciccone said.
Ciccone knows first-hand that the library can be a great place for teens to not only explore books but other services as well because she volunteered at the Mt. Kisco Public Library as a teen herself.
This gaming night started after the library won a small grant from Young Adult Library Services Association. They put this money towards purchasing a Wii. The summer program started on June 29 and will continue until August 17. Ciccone hopes to continue the program on a monthly basis throughout the school year.
