Library Director's Farewell Party a Hit

The Larchmont Public Library Board of Trustees held an open house Tuesday to celebrate the career of Diane Courtney, who will step down as Director of the Library at the end of June. The event, held in the Village Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. directly behind the Library, was organized by the chair of the Board of Trustees Pamela Tillinghast Dubitsky.

"We're very sorry to have her leave," Dubitsky said. " We wanted to do an open house to let everyone come." Elected officials from both the town and village, as well as co-workers, friends and family came out to support Courtney. Following Dubitsky's opening remarks, Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Valerie O'keeffe, who decided not to run for re-election in November, acknowledged how the large turn out reflected the positive impact Courtney had made during her 16-year tenure as director, and for an after-work event no less.

"I'm very sad she's retiring," said Jaine Elkind Eney, Larchmont deputy mayor. "It'll be hard to find someone who is as dedicated and talented as she is." The next three speakers -- Larchmont Mayor Joshua Mandell, county legislator Judy Myers and Assemblyman George Latimer, of the 91st Assembly District -- each presented Courtney with a plaque. However, each choose not to read their respective proclamations, citing their incredible length.

"Clearly, a huge amount of the progress here is due to her," said Stephen Barteltt, secretary-elect of the Rotary Club of Larchmont. "She's been a hard worker and a strong contributor."
