Letter: Shuffle Is Most Cost-Efficient Option

DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by RTM District 1 member John Sini.

I will be voting “yes” on Dec. 13 for a second time to support the shuffle project. After spending many hours of study, I (like a overwhelming majority of my fellow RTM colleagues) came to the conclusion that the shuffle is the most cost-efficient method to meet Darien’s Senior Center needs while also delivering benefits to the broader community.

Opponents to the shuffle have falsely charged that the reconstruction of a new Senior Center at the Edgerton site would be much smaller and cheaper. However, a study completed in 2008 for former First Selectman Evonne Klein tells a much different story.  This comprehensive needs-based assessment showed that a new standalone facility would be a similar size and price as the Mather Community Center, yet would provide much less payback to taxpayers since it would leave 35 Leroy vacant and an underutilized Town Hall Annex in its current state.

By voting “Yes,” you will support the Mather Center, which will benefit our community — old and young — for many years to come.
