Democratic incumbent Carlo Leone came out the winner in Stamford for a three-man contest in the 148th Assembly District. Leone won 3,182 votes, while Republican/Tea Party member Phil Balestriere captured 1,690 and Green Party candidate Rolf Maurer garnered 84 votes.
Leone has been a member of the Assembly since 2003. Earlier this year he played an active role in resisting the planned closure of Courtland Gardens Healthcare Center, backing residents and others who were against the move. He serves as the Assemblys deputy majority whip and chairs the General Bonding Subcommittee of the Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee. Previous committee memberships included Regulation Review, which he chaired; Finance, Revenue and Bonding; and Public Safety. He served as vice chair of the latter two committees.
A Stamford resident for some 20 years, Leone was active in local government as a member of the Stamford Zoning Board of Appeals before his election to state office. Community activities include membership in Stamfords Figli di Rose Italian Club. Leone is a military veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 1987.
