A sun-splashed, breezy warm May day proved the perfect opportunity for a lemonade stand in front of Coleytown Elementary School for four children. Jackie Forget, 9, Clayton Crouch, 10, Margaux Forget, 7 and Maddy Crouch, 8, sold lemonade, cookies, and iced tea. They waved big signs to passing motorists, encouraging them to stop and sample their goods.
The children collected money for Smile Train, an international charity that provides cleft lip and cleft palate surgery to children in need. Maddy Crouch, who attends Coleytown with Clayton, said she got the idea to organize a stand and donate the money. The children rotated two-person shifts between waving signs and distributing the goodies. Maddy said the children expected to attend the stand for about two hours and hoped to raise $100 for the charity. Through the first 30 minutes, the group was off to a good start with $42.50, but that did not count the $23 they had to re-pay parents for the food.
The children attempted to organize a stand before on the nearby street on which they lived. "Nobody ever comes down that street,'' Jackie says, explaining the more lucrative move just in front of Coleytown. Jackie and Margauaux attend North Stratfield School in Fairfield.
