It may only be the first round, but after Thursdays performances youd be hard-pressed to say that the Rams lacrosse teams arent in good shape to make deep runs in the state tournament. The girls team started of the afternoons doubleheader at Dunning Stadium with a 20-9 win over New Fairfield. The boys had similar success against another SWC opponent, routing Pomperaug 20-2 to advance to the second round.
The girls were led by a pair of senior tri-captains on offense. Anjalie Christie had her hand in half of the Rams production, picking up eight goals and adding two assists. Fellow captain Kacey Pippett contributed five goals and three assists. New Canaan also got a solid performance from Liz DeTour, who had four goals.
On the boys side, the evening can be summed up with one telling statistic: The Rams could have won with just Corey Newtons goals alone. The senior captain picked up four in the first quarter, helping New Canaan jump out to an 8-0 first-quarter lead, and allowing coach Alex Whitten to rest his starters for the remainder of the game. But the Rams proved their depth Thursday, with 12 players contributing goals. Pomperaug did not manage to score until the fourth quarter, when Wade McNamara picked up a pair to put his team on the board.
Next on the schedule for the third-seeded boys is No. 11 Daniel Hand in the Class M quarterfinals Saturday at Dunning Stadium. The second-seeded girls will host No. 7 Brookfield Monday evening.
