Latin Grooves Hook Eastonites

Zumba is catching on in Easton, and the main reason just might be the energetic personality of the local teacher of the exercise and dance regimen. Aida Fedorko touts the benefits of the program and can't help showing off her rhythm, even while seated.

The class, which combines Latin dance and a cardio workout, is so engaging you often forget you're exercising at all, she says. "You can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour because you're doing all these delicious Latin grooves, but you're adding these components of fitness," she said, dancing in her chair.

Fit and toned, exercise has always been an important and empowering part of Fedorko's life. Between working as a personal trainer and sports specific trainer, boxing, sculpting, spinning, kickboxing and Zumba, it's no wonder she stays in shape.

And it seems Zumba is just the class for her to teach. "My mother is from Cuba, I've been doing Latin dancing since I was born," she said, adding that the class can be for anyone. Students in her class range from teenagers to senior citizens, all working at their own pace. She has seen women melt the pounds away after taking her class.

"Not only that, it's so therapeutic. I really dance and watch people dance their blues away and you just feel so good. It is so amazing, I just love it," she said.

Fedorko teaches Zumba at the Easton Community Center Mondays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. from July 12 to Aug. 30. The center welcomes curious individuals to try out a complimentary class. But Fedorko warns: once you try it, you'll be hooked.
