While the choices are endless, some of the most popular roofs are made up of asphalt shingles. In fact, asphalt shingles account for about 50% of the market, and since they are made from recyclable materials, they're even eco-friendly. Their appearance is more subtle than other shingles, but they are still available in three different options based on preference.
Another type of roof that's being seen more and more is the synthetic slate tile roof. The tiles are generally modeled after older, traditional slate products but with the added benefits of better durability, lightweight material and a modern flair.
Another roofing option that's getting more attention is metal. Although it has a higher cost than some of the other choices (for instance, metal costs about $10 per square foot versus $3.50 per square foot for asphalt shingles), the durable material can last years longer and be worth the expense.
Finally, cedar is an option that has recently hit the roofing market, but there are significant concerns that go along with this product. If laid and installed correctly, cedar roofs can be very wind resistant, resulting in fewer lost shingles. However, flammability could be a concern and should be taken into consideration.
