During this time, students who have been “caught” performing an act of kindness received special recognition.
Spearheading activities for the month is fourth-grade teacher Dave Jensen.
“The big idea is that acts of kindness inspire kindness in others and no act of kindness is ever wasted,” he explained.
As part of the activities, during the morning announcements Jensen describes acts of kindness.
“It could be as simple as helping a classmate, eating lunch with someone new, or opening a door for someone,” he said.
He reminds children that there are many ways to be kind, which in turn can make the world a better place. Children have been encouraged to perform one act of kindness each day.
To reinforce these messages, students who have been seen performing acts of kindness by a teacher or adults in the building have been recognized. Teachers and adults who witness an act of kindness are asked to place the student’s name, along with their teacher’s name and what the student did in the designated “Kindness Box” in the main office. Then Jensen and his class of enthusiastic “Kindness Elves” go to work.
Based on an idea from third-grader Cooper Tumm, the Kindness Elves created clay ornaments to give to students whose names appear in the Kindness Box.
“We thought it would be nice to give these students a small token as a wonderful reminder of their good deeds,” Jensen said.
“I feel good about it because kids are being kind,” said fourth-grader Marina Cilento.
Kent Primary School Principal Tarkan Ceng praised the effort and said, “As a building we have developed the tag line: 'Inspire, Develop, Prepare.' I believe this event covers them all. It is a proud moment when we can take the sincere thoughts of a child and have it take shape so that it supports our vision and mission building wide.”
