Kennedy Catholic Loses Slam Dunk Consolation Game

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Kennedy Catholic girls’ basketball coach Al Morales Jr. acknowledged after Tuesday’s 38-28 loss to Brewster that his team might have been slightly fatigued after playing two games in two days.

But he would not accept that as the reason for the loss.

“You can’t use that as an excuse,” Morales said. “This is varsity basketball.”

The Gaels lost to the Bears in the consolation game of the girls’ tournament at the Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center.

Kennedy turned the ball over 22 times Tuesday, while Brewster committed 17 turnovers. The Gaels also made only 10 of 52 shots (19.2 percent) while the Bears made 13 of 42 shots (31 percent).

Morales said both of those issues contributed to the loss.

“Our guards didn’t look to attack the basket,” Morales said. “We didn’t do a good job of protecting the ball.”

Brewster’s Marisa Delzio led all scorers with 11 points. Tara Cremins and Sara Dowd led the Gaels with 7 points apiece. Dowd also added 10 rebounds while Shayna Gaskins had nine boards.

In total, the Gaels outrebounded the Bears, 50-34.

Brewster started the game on a 12-1 run before Sara Dowd hit a three-pointer to end the scoring drought with about two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Gaels cut the lead to four in the second quarter but Brewster again widened the gap to 11 by halftime.

Despite losing two games in two days, Morales said the tone in the locker room would be positive because the Gaels have yet to start league play. Kennedy played in the Slam Dunk Tournament and against other tough competition, he said, to prepare for the league games.

“You learn from it and keep working,” Morales said.
