KATONAH, N.Y. The Katonah Village Library will pay for sidewalk repairs with a $24,000 state grant in an effort to improve safety as well as access for patrons with physical disabilities.
The library will use the money to repair uneven sidewalks around the building, library Director Van Kozelka said. There are broken flagstones and flaking," she said. Also, there are gaps between some of the stones, she said.
The library was awarded $24,037 through a New York State public library construction grant, Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R, C-Golden's Bridge) announced Friday. The money is part of $14 million allocated for public library construction in the 2011-12 New York state budget.
Construction work will start in about a month, Kozelka said. The library applied for the grant in August and budgeted for sidewalk repairs hoping that part of the project's funding would come from the state grant.
New stones will be installed and all stones will be regrouted in the affected areas, which include the childrens library entrance and the handicap ramp in front of the building. In addition to these repairs, the library will put in a new septic pipe.
The library is grateful to Castelli for his support of the library and its programs, Kozelka said.
As the governors coordinated New York Works plan to reinvigorate our bridge, highway, dam and park infrastructure continues to progress, I am pleased that other worthy public works initiatives such as library construction grants have been maintained, Castelli said in a statement.
