Born in Passaic, Schaefer lived in Pequannock, South Hackensack and Preston, New York, before moving to Cookstown 20 years ago. He was a superintendent of maintenance at the Chancery Office in the Archdiocese of Newark for 30 years before he retired.
He had served in the Marines during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the VFW in South Hackensack.
Schaefer is survived by his wife, Mary (Salapka) Schaefer; children Louis Schaefer, Paul Schaefer and his wife Elizabete, and Jane Green and her husband Jay; grandchildren Daniel and Stephen Schaefer, and David and Jenny Green; and sister Bertha Wharton.
He was predeceased by his siblings Edward Schaefer, Elsie Marker, Emma Kough, Olga Polhemus and Dorothy Norris.
Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Rd., in North Arlington. The funeral will be from the funeral home on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., thence to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, in North Arlington, for a 9:45 a.m. funeral mass. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
