Kane Moore, 32, of Hempstead, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the Sept. 21, 2024, killing of Maurice Sinclair Thomas, 39, in Hempstead, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Moore previously pleaded guilty on Jan. 6 before Judge Caryn Fink to first-degree manslaughter and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. in the rear parking lot of 134 Yale St., where Moore, Thomas, and several friends were playing cards, according to prosecutors.

An argument broke out between Moore and Thomas, and Moore pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Thomas once in the left side, authorities said.

Thomas was taken to NYU Langone Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m., according to the DA's office.

Moore fled the scene but was arrested one month later in Detroit, Michigan, on Oct. 21, 2024, by members of the Detroit Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was extradited to Nassau County on Oct. 31, 2024, prosecutors said.

"A disagreement ended in bloodshed when Kane Moore shot and killed Maurice Sinclair in a senseless act of violence and anger," Donnelly said. "The safety of our communities depends on keeping guns off our streets and out of the hands of violent individuals like Moore."

Thomas, known to family and friends as "Resee," was born Aug. 1, 1985, in Columbus, Georgia. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and was the father of four children — three daughters and a son — according to his obituary.

He is survived by his mother, Delphine Thomas; his father, retired Army Platoon Sergeant Larry Wilson; his sister, Natasha Nicole Thomas; his brother, Michael Angelo Foster Jr.; his children; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Details about Thomas' life were available through his obituary. His loved ones are invited to share additional information with Daily Voice by emailing [email protected].
