FAIRFIELD, Conn. Joseph L. Skrovanek of Fairfield died June 1 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was 93.
A Fairfield resident for most of his life, Skrovanek was the owner a Fairfield Plumbing and Heating for 40 years.
Born in Coaldale, Pa., he was the son of Steve Skrovanek and Bertha Slahucka. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard in 1937 and with the 242nd Coast Artillery and 128th Coast Artillery Battalion during World War II.
Skrovanek participated in the Battle of Normandy Beach during D-Day, where he landed in the fifth wave assigned to the Third Army under General Patton. Following the war, he began his own plumbing business until his retirement.
A longtime parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Skrovanek was a 27-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9427, where he served as junior vice commander. He also was a member of American Legion Post 74 for 14 years and served as post adjutant.
Skrovanek was an avid gardener, fisherman and an accomplished wood carver. He delighted in time spent in his gardens and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Barbara Mitchell, and her fiance, Derek Schwindeman, of Monroe, Conn., and Susan (John) Hriczo, of Newburyport, Mass.; a brother, Louis J. (Martha) Skrovanek, of Shelton; good friend, Louise Gurke, of Bridgeport; and two granddaughters. He was predeceased by a stepbrother, Frank Moravek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Fairfield. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield.
