Cornwall resident Joseph Keegan, 35, was arrested following the incident near Main Street and Willow Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 1, the Town of Cornwall Police Department announced.
The incident began at around 9 p.m., when officers responded to the area for a complaint. During their investigation, officers encountered Keegan, who they said became confrontational and threatened them, including making threats to shoot officers at the scene, police said.
As the situation escalated, officers requested help from other law enforcement agencies. Keegan then retreated into a home before running away through the rear of the property, according to the department.
Police then searched the surrounding area and said they eventually found Keegan trying to re-enter the home. When officers confronted him again, Keegan allegedly physically resisted arrest and assaulted officers before they were able to take him into custody.
Two Town of Cornwall Police officers were injured during the encounter. Both were taken for medical evaluations, treated, and released, the department said.
Keegan was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, along with disorderly conduct, second-degree harassment, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in Newburgh City Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail.
Police did not provide information about bail or his next court appearance.
