The assault happened outside Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital in Valley Stream at 2:05 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, according to Nassau County Police.
The 51-year-old driver was parked outside the hospital waiting for his customer when Jonathan Sharrock, 37, of Laurelton, approached him and said his car had broken down, detectives said.
Sharrock asked to borrow the driver's cellphone, and the driver allowed him to make a call, according to police.
After the call, the driver asked for his phone back, but Sharrock became aggressive and demanded that the Uber driver take him instead of the customer he was waiting for, detectives said.
When the driver refused, Sharrock began punching him in the face through the vehicle's window, leaving him with injuries to his forehead, lip, and chin, according to police. Sharrock also damaged the vehicle during the attack.
Hospital security restrained Sharrock until police arrived, authorities said.
While officers were securing him to a stretcher, Sharrock bit and scratched them, police said. After he was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation, he threatened police officers and hospital staff and spit at officers, according to the department.
Sharrock was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, third-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, making a terroristic threat, and second-degree harassment.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.
