The Westport Fire Department was called to Parker Harding Plaza to put out a blaze engulfing a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta. When two engines arrived at 5:50 p.m., along with the shift commander's car, the car's passenger side was completely in flames. The heat was enough to damage a nearby 2007 Lexus RX350.
Both entrances to the plaza were blocked while the firefighters did their work. The situation was complicated by gasoline making it into a storm drain, for which the Department of Environmental Protection and the Coast Guard were notified. Speed Dry and boom material were used to soak up the spill.
Despite the inferno, there were no reported injuries to firefighters or passengers.
