Officers were called to the 4500 block of Roundhill Road in Rose Hill late last month after a suspect forced entry into a van and stole multiple power tools, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
A witness saw the suspect pulling tools from the van and snapped photos of both the man and the vehicle before police arrived, officers said.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage and vehicle information, which led them to identify Jeffrey Kranz, 58, of no fixed address, as the suspect.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle connected to the theft on Wednesday, Jan. 7, but the driver took off, according to police.
The following day, Thursday, Jan. 8, officers were alerted to the same vehicle after a license plate reader hit, with help from the Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit.
Officers found the vehicle in the 6100 block of Richmond Highway in Fair Haven, where Kranz was taken into custody, police said.
Kranz was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was charged with:
Grand larceny;
Stolen property with intent to sell;
Disregard the police command to stop endangerment.
He is being held on a $2,500 bond.
