FAIRFIELD, Conn. Jean E. Baranyar of Fairfield died May 31 at her home. She was 80.
Born and raised in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, Baranyar was a resident of Fairfield for many years. She received a bachelor's of science degree magna cum laude from the University of Bridgeport, a master's degree and sixth year certificate from Fairfield University and a certificate in library science from Norwalk Community College.
Upon graduating from college, Baranyar started a career as a developmental engineer at Avco-Lycoming in Stratford. A few years later, she began a second career in education, teaching math.
Her long association with Notre Dame High School began in 1970, when she joined the faculty with the Girls School on Jewett Avenue. She served as a moderator of the math club and faculty advisor for the National Honor Society.
In 1973, when the school became co-educational, Jean served as co-chair for the math department. Her third career began in 1993, when she became the Notre Dame librarian.
She is survived many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Theresa Kali Baranyar; a sister, Mary Cancilla; a brother, Stephen Baranyar; a niece and two nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Lesko and Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield Center. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Emery's Church in Fairfield, with burial to follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery.
