FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Jean B. “Gammie” Chapman, wife of Frederick G. Chapman, died Friday, March 25. She was 89.
She was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Boston, the daughter of the late Leonard and Sarah Levy, and had been a Fairfield resident since 1968.
She was an active member of the Covenant Church of Easton. She traveled to Ecuador to assist in building a church, she volunteered her time to help feed and clothe the homeless in New York City and Bridgeport and, on Sundays, you could find her in the church kitchen organizing fellowship hour.
She loved golf, bowling, babysitting, going to the casino and playing cribbage with her family. She was a member of the 9 Hole and 18 Hole Women's Golf Associations at Smith Richardson and she served two terms as golf commissioner for the Town of Fairfield.
Every Wednesday during the winter months for almost 45 years, you could find her at the Nutmeg and Circle Lanes. She was an avid women's UConn basketball fan. She loved to cook and bake for her family, especially on holidays. She also loved to travel with them and had the wonderful fortune of living across the street from one of her granddaughters, grandson-in-law and her two great-granddaughters.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Karyn Jean Morgan and her husband, Tom Morgan; her son, Frederic W. Chapman and his wife, Terri; her grandchildren, Sarah Jean Roman and her husband, Bill Roman and Rebecca Anne Carruthers and her significant other, Michael Cleary; great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Jean Carruthers and Madison Elizabeth Roman; sister-in-law, Teresa Levy; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Sweetie.
She was predeceased by her son, Robert S. Chapman; and by her brother, Morris Levy.
Friends may greet her family from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield Center. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Covenant Church of Easton with Pastor Cary Slater officiating. Interment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery.
