Jared C. Hirschowitz, 41, died when a large tree limb crashed onto his moving vehicle on Raritan Road near Quimby Lane at approximately 8:08 p.m., Scotch Plains Police Chif David Lavery said.
Hirschowitz was driving a silver 2023 Kia wagon eastbound on Raritan Road during a brief but intense storm when high winds caused the large limb to snap and fall onto the hood and windshield of his vehicle, the chief said.
The vehicle then veered off the road, struck a bush and a tree, and came to rest on the front lawn of 2150 Raritan Road, Lavery said. Hirschowitz died in the crash.
A 40-year-old woman riding in the front passenger seat was treated at the scene before being taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation by the Scotch Plains Police Department, the Union County Crash Team, and the Union County Medical Examiner's Office.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Scotch Plains Police Department at 908-322-7100.
