YONKERS, N.Y. James Coote of Trumbull, Conn., formerly of Yonkers, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn. He was 87.
He was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Yonkers to James A. and Rosanna Ward Coote. He was raised and educated in Yonkers, graduating from Commerce High School. Coote worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Yonkers for 41 years until his retirement.
He served in the Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, in the Pacific and African Campaigns. He was a former member of Disabled American Veterans Post 16 and a parishioner of Christ the King Church in Yonkers. He enjoyed gardening and dancing with his wife, Virginia Ray, whom he married on May 18, 1947, in Holy Eucharist Church.
Coote is survived by two sons, Robert (Jacqueline) Coote, of New Fairfield, Conn., and William (Mary Anne) Coote, of Yonkers; two daughters, Virginia (Jerry) Forestieri, of Jamestown, N.C., and Ellen (Gregg) Spychalla, of Trumbull; and 10 grandchildren. His wife, Virginia, predeceased him on April 15, 2010.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home in Yonkers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
